Just as cameras have moved from film to digital, so has veterinary imaging! Digital x-ray machines allow veterinarians to take properly exposed radiographs instantly and more efficiently than with traditional films. These units have revolutionized the quality and scope of radiographs that can be taken in the field. No longer do you have to haul your horse to a hospital in order to obtain good quality x-rays. No longer does your veterinarian need to make a second trip to your barn to re-take an image that did not develop properly back at the office… F9 Equine is proud to offer high-quality digital x-rays in the field.

While x-ray machines are best-suited to image bones and joints, ultrasound machines are designed to image soft tissue structures. Ultrasound machines are used commonly to evaluate tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries, as well as certain organs. These machines are also used extensively with reproduction. Better technology means better quality images, which translate into more accurate diagnoses. F9 Equine is proud to own a state-of-the art digital ultrasonography machine manufactured by GE Medical Systems.

F9 Equine also has a one meter flexible endoscope. This scope allows us to evaluate your horse’s nasal passages, throat, upper airway, and esophagus. Our scope is portable and along with all of our imaging equipment, is brought along on our farm calls so we have it when we need it! We also have a three meter flexible video endoscope that allows up to evaluate a horse’s stomach and esophagus, and take images for diagnostic purposes.

Sometimes radiography, ultrasonography, and flexible endoscopy aren’t enough to diagnose your horse’s problem. Nuclear scintigraphy (bone scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other imaging modalities are often used when we are still looking for answers. Our veterinarians will be happy to recommend when these imaging modalities are indicated and can refer you to the appropriate experts.
